Professional Statement
As a researcher, my interests have been in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, particularly viruses. Much of my research focused on the disease(s) caused by HIV-1 and its simian version, SIV. Our work throughout multiple decades focused on the geographical distribution of infected cells and the many different immune and non-immune cells in tissues 鈥 what has recently been referred to as 鈥渟patial biology.鈥 The interests in my group evolved from focusing on the spatial distribution of infected cells and immune cells, to the localized and systemic inflammation caused by viruses, and then to the immune and inflammatory role of the lymphatic vasculature. Through these studies we became interested in inflammatory immune factors called chemokines and then in therapeutic intervention strategies that reduce the inflammation driven by chemokines.I developed an interest in academic leadership while leading my graduate research laboratory for nearly 20 years, and then through the wonderful opportunity at the University of Pittsburgh to lead multiple graduate programs. Every step in my progression to dean has been a tremendous learning and service opportunity, all of which have positioned me to serve the faculty, staff and students at 草榴社区入口 in ways that will hopefully facilitate growth and fulfillment across the teams in our enterprise.
