Professional Statement
Dr. Stephen Charles is a clinical ethicist, a dedicated educator, and a higher education administrator. His primary role at 草榴社区入口 School of Medicine (BCM SOM) is the Associate Dean of Curriculum for the BCM SOM 鈥 Temple Campus. He is a Senior Faculty Member in the Department of Education, Innovation, and Technology at BCM. His educational background includes a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction and Master of Arts in Bioethics and Medical Humanities, and a Master of Science in Adult Education.Dr. Charles has 15 years of experience in medical education. His prior roles include being the Assistant Dean of Assessment and Outcomes and Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Interprofessional Collaboration at East Carolina University. Before that, he was the Director of Medical Education at the University of Kansas School of Medicine 鈥 Wichita Campus. In this role, he helped expand the Wichita Regional Campus from a clinical regional campus to a full four-year campus.
Dr. Charles is a strong proponent for advancing the field of medical education. His educational research projects are focused on developing undergraduate medical education curriculum with a focus on active learning, interprofessional simulation, and competency-based assessments.
His passion for medical education extends beyond the classroom. He has actively fostered partnerships between academic institutions and healthcare organizations to create experiential learning opportunities and promote interprofessional collaboration.
In addition to his medical education scholarly work, he is an advocate for promoting a mindset of cultural humility. As a clinical ethicist, Dr. Charles listens with interest and curiosity to his patients and their families, strives to be non-judgmental, and is willing to learn from his patients, their families, and the healthcare team. Additionally, he has championed initiatives that promote education and a deeper understanding of the unique healthcare needs of LGBT+ community.
At BCM SOM 鈥 Temple Campus, Dr. Charles continues to build off his education and experiences to prepare future physicians to obtain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to meet the healthcare challenges of the 21st century.
