Professional Statement
Lyahn Hwang, M.D. is a fellowship-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon who specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery. Dr. Hwang received her undergraduate degrees from Rice University. She then completed her medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. She went on to complete a rigorous integrated residency in plastic surgery at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City where she was education chief resident her final year and was awarded teaching awards by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Following this, she completed a fellowship in hand, microsurgery, and peripheral nerve at Washington University in St. Louis.Dr. Hwang truly believes that developing an individualized patient care plan while collaborating with colleagues who may be part of a patient’s treatment team is key in optimizing their care during oftentimes a stressful time. She is passionate about improving patient outcomes after upper extremity trauma including soft tissue, bony, and peripheral nerve reconstruction and particularly has a clinical interest in helping patients with peripheral nerve compression and conditions involving the brachial plexus. She recognizes that reconstructive surgery particularly with respect to the upper extremity involves restoration of both form and function such that her patients can hopefully regain mobility and independence in a pain-free manner.
