Professional Statement
Cells require energy to grow. Cancer occurs when cells find ways to circumvent limitations on energy, either through inhibiting pathways that prevent growth, activating pathways that promote growth, or finding new sources of energy. Two pathways critical for sensing the amount of energy in the cell and deciding whether cells should grow are the AMPK and mTOR pathways. Alterations in both of these pathways are implicated in cancer and metabolic disease. My lab is focused on 1) understanding the causative role of AMPK in hepatocellular carcinoma and 2) dissecting the role of AMPK-dependent regulation of mTOR in metabolic disease and cancer.Selected Publications
