The Associate Chief Nurse for Research and Evidence Based Practice (ACN, Research) promotes research-related activities, publishes in refereed journals, and seeks funding to support research studies and/or programs. The ACN, Research provides leadership in an integrated research program(s) related to complex healthcare issues that influence the VA mission, health care and policy development to create a culture of evidence based nursing practice. The ACN, Research is responsible and accountable for the coordination and evaluation of integrated programs that may cross service and/or discipline lines and is most optimally integrated within an academic affiliate (�����������) and/or a VA Center of Excellence.

2020 Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Scholar

The Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Scholar Program @ Parkinson's Foundation prepares the next generation of nurses to care for the growing population of people with PD. This highly-prestigious 50-hour accredited "train-the trainer" Nurse Faculty Program improves PD nursing care by training faculty leaders across the U.S. to educate nursing students. The program only accepts 5-6 faculty cohort annually in each site. ����������� in Houston Texas held its first host-site of the program on February 24-27, 2020.

Outcomes of doctoral dissertation study that focused on “Environmental Effects on Incidence of Falls in the Hospitalized Elderly” presented in Vancouver, Canada. Best practice of multiple hospital fall prevention bundle was implemented in the elderly veteran population in the form of "Fall Prevention Room". Primary aim was to measure the effectiveness of a primary environmental fall intervention using a “Fall Prevention Room” (FPR) to reduce falls. Role: Primary data collector and co-investigator for this doctoral research.

Promotion of Influenza Vaccination in the Spinal Cord Injury Clinic and Home Care Program

Grant funding from Veterans Health Administration, VISN-16, 2015 Public Health Grant Award Program/Clinical Public Health, Office of Public Health and Office of Health Equity

This Public Health Clinical Grant Award supported the influenza vaccination in Spinal Cord Injury Outpatients & Home Care Veterans by providing influenza vaccinations. Most veterans enrolled in the SCI-HC program are mostly located within the radius of 100 miles from the facility. These veterans who previously sustained spinal cord injury face multiple health issues and other challenges related to activities of daily living such as, transportation ordeal to present to the SCI Clinic or emergency department by ambulance and/or, if not able to sit – up on a wheelchair, which could impede their immediate access to preventive care. The VHA Seasonal Influenza Manual (2014), recommends key strategies to increase vaccination rates among veterans by “making vaccination convenient” (p. 111), which include; “bringing the vaccine to residents and including influenza vaccination with home visits” (p. 115). Thus, taking influenza vaccination to the veteran in his/her residential place in the community may increase the likelihood that they may be vaccinated. Role: Primary Grant Writer
