Professional Statement
As a health psychologist, my research mission is to develop and evaluate interventions to help patients and their family members cope with the symptoms and psychological demands of cancer and its treatment. Toward that end, my research: 1) engages patients, caregivers, and health care and community stakeholders to identify care gaps; 2) assesses factors that influence cancer care implementation and outcomes; and, 3) develops interventions to address disparate outcomes of care. My work spans the entire cancer prevention and control continuum and includes studies of couples coping with pre-neoplastic conditions, patients receiving curative cancer treatment and their informal caregivers, families coping with advanced cancers, and post-treatment cancer survivors. I am nationally and internationally recognized for my work to refine the methods and models used to understand how patients and caregivers navigate and cope with the cancer experience. I am also a recipient of several major grant awards from the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institute of Nursing Research, and U.S. Department of Defense. My research interests include:
• Understanding how individual, social, economic, and health system factors affect patient and caregiver access to and experiences with cancer care; and in turn, how this affects patient and caregiver health outcomes.
• Developing and evaluating behavioral interventions that empower patients and caregivers to play a more active role in health care with the goal of improving their health and well-being.
• Developing and evaluating interventions that seek to enhance the quality of cancer care, patient and caregiver experiences, and outcomes at the individual, provider, and health system levels.
• Working collaboratively with patients, caregivers, and healthcare and community stakeholders to develop and implement innovative solutions to reduce cancer burden.
